How Is Plantar Fasciitis Treated?

Have questions about plantar fasciitis? Our foot care professionals have the answers.

Dealing with heel pain? Wondering if it’s plantar fasciitis? Not sure if it’s time to turn to our Elgin and Chicago, IL podiatrist Dr. Supreet Ghuman and her team for care? Here’s what you should know about this common overuse injury.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the result of inflammation in the plantar fascia, a ligament in the foot that connects the toes to the heel bone and provides arch support. About one in 10 people will develop plantar fasciitis at some point during their lifetime.

What Are the Symptoms Associated With Plantar Fasciitis?

Heel pain is the classic symptom of plantar fasciitis. Unlike Achilles tendonitis (another condition that causes heel pain), plantar fasciitis causes heel pain that originates at the bottom of the heel and extends to the arch. This type of heel pain is usually worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity. Sound like what you’re experiencing? If so, our Chicago and Elgin, IL, podiatrists can easily diagnose your plantar fasciitis and provide you with the treatment plan you need to heal.

How Is Plantar Fasciitis Treated?

Most of the time, plantar fasciitis is self-limiting and will go away without having to see a doctor. While it can take weeks or even months for this condition to resolve itself, there are simple measures you can take to speed up the healing process including,

  • Stretching the foot to alleviate stiffness
  • Icing the heel for 15-20 minutes, two-three times a day
  • Taking pain relievers when symptoms arise
  • Resting as much as possible and avoiding high-impact exercises such as running
  • Wearing appropriate, supportive footwear
  • Getting custom orthotics from our foot and ankle team

If I Think I Have Plantar Fasciitis Should I See a Doctor?

If this is the first time dealing with heel pain then it’s a good idea to see our Elgin and Chicago, IL, podiatrists to determine the cause. After all, heel pain isn’t always caused by plantar fasciitis so it’s important that you are getting the proper care you need. You should also turn to us if your heel pain is severe, isn’t getting better within a few days or occurs after an injury.

Ligament tears and tarsal tunnel syndrome may mimic symptoms of plantar fasciitis. Those with severe heel pain that isn’t responding to at-home care should also seek treatment from a podiatry professional.

Don’t ignore plantar fasciitis heel pain. Especially when our Elgin and Chicago, IL, podiatrist Dr. Ghuman can provide you with the immediate care you need when pain arises. Call Prairie Foot & Ankle at (224) 227-6973 to schedule a no-risk consultation.
