Foot Pain And When To Be Concerned

How your podiatrist in Elgin, and Chicago, IL, can help your feet when you have diabetes.

If you are diabetic, you probably already know the effects the disease can have on your body. Did you know that some of the most pronounced effects are on the extremities, including your feet? In fact, your feet need special care when you are diabetic. Your podiatrist can help.

Dr. Supreet Ghuman at Prairie Foot & Ankle offers comprehensive foot and ankle services, including treatment of diabetic feet. He has two office locations in Elgin, and Chicago, IL, to help you and your feet.

Diabetes causes impairment to some of the main systems in your body, including your:

  • Immune system, resulting in a small injury not healing properly
  • Circulatory system, resulting in lack of proper blood flow to your extremities
  • Nervous system, resulting in peripheral neuropathy and loss of sensation

To take care of your diabetic feet, you need to perform these steps every day:

  • Wash and dry your feet thoroughly to prevent infection
  • Apply moisturizing cream to prevent dryness and cracks
  • Stretch your feet and toes to boost circulation and maintain flexibility

In addition, you should perform these steps daily to prevent wounds and infections from developing:

  • Examine your feet and toes for cuts, blisters, or other open skin irritations
  • Apply antiseptic or antibiotic cream or lotion to the area
  • Bandage the affected area
  • Re-examine the wound frequently to look for any signs of infection
  • Wear comfortable, protective footwear to avoid injuring your feet
  • Avoid going barefoot

When you have diabetes, it’s also important to visit your podiatrist at least once every 6 to 12 months for a foot examination. Your podiatrist can identify small foot issues and help prevent them from growing into serious foot problems.
