Treating Diabetic Foot Pain

Here are some helpful tips for how to effectively care for diabetic feet.

If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes then chances are good that your doctor has talked to you about how your condition can affect other areas of the body, particularly your feet. If you also have diabetic neuropathy then you are also no stranger to tingling, numbness, or pain in your feet and hands. From wound care to custom orthotics, our Elgin and Chicago, IL, podiatrist Dr. Supreet Ghuman can help you protect your feet from diabetic-related complications. Here’s what you can do to manage your diabetic foot pain,

Soak Your Feet

One way to give your aching, sore feet the pampering they need is by soaking them in warm, soothing water. The warm water can also boost circulation in the feet, which can help provide some relief and comfort; however, if you do have peripheral neuropathy in your feet then you may also have a loss of sensation. If so, it’s best to test the water with your elbow before putting your feet in the water to prevent burns.

Get Regular Exercise

If you are dealing with pain, tingling or other problems as a result of diabetes exercise may be the last thing on your mind, but you may be surprised to discover that a little bit of exercise every day could actually ease your pain. Exercise boosts a ton of benefits, from improving blood sugar levels to improving your body and providing you with an outlet for your stress. While you will most certainly want to talk with your Elgin podiatrist about ways to safely exercise and care for your feet to prevent diabetic wounds, going for a light bike ride or a walk may be a major benefit to your health.

Take a Pain Reliever

While this may not be something you want to rely on all the time, taking an over the counter pain reliever can certainly do in a pinch when you are experiencing significant foot pain. Of course, this medication should not be taken regularly or for long periods of time, so talk with your podiatrist if you are having to take pain relievers often.

Consider Getting Regular Massages

Another way to get the blood flowing to your feet while also improving sore and tender spots is by getting regular massage therapy. Talk with your doctor about whether massage therapy could be beneficial to you if you are dealing with diabetic neuropathy in your feet. These regular sessions can provide your feet with the TLC they deserve. Alternatively, you can also massage your feet on your own to boost circulation.
